Stairlifts Grants

If you find yourself in a situation where your mobility is reduced and you are no longer able to manage the stairs safely and confidently, it may be time to think about installing a stairlift.  However, at a considerable cost, this is not always a viable option for people.  Luckily, there are grants available through the government and your local authority, so this would be a good place to start when looking for stairlifts grants.

Disabled Facilities Grants

Disabled facilities grants are provided by every local authority in England, Northern Ireland and Wales and are designed to help individuals make reasonable adaptations to their homes in order to enable you to continue to live there.  If your local authority agrees that the adaptation you are requesting is reasonable, practical and necessary, a grant may be paid out to you.

Disabled Facilities Grants Criteria

In order to apply for stairlifts grants through the disabled facilities grants, you may have to meet certain eligibility criteria.  Although these vary for each local authority, some of the more general ones include:

  • Being disabled
  • Being the occupier of a property (owner or tenant)
  • Being able to prove that you intend to continue to occupy the property as your main residence for at least five years (the duration of the grant).

What Can Disabled Facilities Grants Be Used for?

The disabled facilities grants can be used for a variety of adaptations to your home, such as:

  • Stairlifts grants
  • Grants to assist you in widening your doors installing ramps
  • Installing new or upgrading existing heating systems if you can demonstrate that lack of heat worsens your disability
  • Changing controls used for heating or lightning to make them more user friendly for people with a disability
  • Other improvements that allow you to move easier in and around your home
The adaptations that are most relevant to you will be decided upon by an occupational therapist who will come and visit you to assess your needs when you apply for stairlifts grants or other disabled facilities grants.

How Much Can You Receive?

The amount of money you could receive from stairlifts grants will depend entirely on your situation.  Generally, you will be means tested, meaning that someone will closely look at your income and expenditure, ensuring that you do not have the financial means to afford a stairlift yourself.  Being awarded a stairlifts grant will not affect any benefits that you are currently receiving.

The maximum amount you could receive for stairlifts grants or other disabled facilities grants currently stands at £30,000 in England for each application and £36,000 in Wales.  It is possible in exceptional cases for a council to agree to higher amounts, depending on the individual situation.  Working out exactly how much you will be able to receive from stairlifts grants is very complicated, but would be explained to you when you receive a decision.

As you can see, if you find that you require a stairlift to assist in your mobility but find yourself unable to afford one, the first port of call should always be your local authority who may be able to offer your stairlifts grants.
