Price of Stairlifts

Stairlifts are very important additions to the home of anybody with reduced mobility, young or old.  They allow those people who for whatever reason are incapable of managing stairs unaided to once again have full use of their homes.  In some homes, having a stairlift installed even means that people are able to access their home independently, particularly in old Victorian properties that often have several steps leading up to the front door.  Of course, stairlifts are not cheap and it may be useful to compare the price of stairlifts before deciding to invest in one.

Comparing the Price of Stairlifts

When you are comparing the price of stairlifts, it is important to first know what types of stairlifts are available.  These are:

  • Straight stairlifts which travel up and down staircases with no bends or corners
  • Curved stairlifts which can be fitted to any shape of staircase, including spiral staircases
The price of stairlifts for these two types is very different.  The cost of a straight stairlift that is new and includes installation will be around £1,500.  As these are very simple stairlifts, travelling along a single straight rail, it is also possible to purchase these second hand, and install them yourself which will significantly reduce the price.

Curved stairlifts, however, are much more expensive as these have to be custom made to fit an individual staircase.  It is possible to purchase them second hand, but the price difference is very small, as a second hand curved stairlift will still need to be specifically adapted to fit the new staircase that it is intended for.  Furthermore, installation is far more complicated and it is not advised to do this yourself.  The price of stairlifts for curved stairs ranges from around £3,500 for a second hand one to around £4,000 for a new one, including installation.

Contacting Installers to Compare the Price of Stairlifts

One of the best things to do when you are comparing the price of stairlifts is to contact several installers and ask them to provide you with a free, no obligation quotation.  Speaking to at least three different companies has many benefits, including:

  • You will receive sound and professional advice on which stairlift best suits your needs
  • You will receive easy to understand literature and information about stairlifts
  • You will be sure that the price of stairlifts you are quoted is fair, as each quotation should be similar
Stairlift installation companies should not pressure you into making a purchase and should be more than happy to provide you with any information you need.  This allows you to compare the price of stairlifts and decide which option is most applicable to your exact needs and requirements.  You may even want to consider renting a stairlift, particularly if your mobility issues are temporary, which could be a great way to keep the price of stairlifts down.  If you do opt for this, however, it is important to ensure that you can check the quality of the stairlift you are renting.
